The Future of Education

I believe that the idea of technology taking over our lives is something to deeply consider. Already, we as humans are immensely dependent on our phones. Whether that may be to keep in contact with friends, update social media profiles or simply aid us whenever we encounter “awkward” situations, technology is a major part of our lives. The idea that technology may affect future education is something very controversial. On one side of the topic, one could argue that robots teaching in schools will lack that important sense of human to human interaction. Quite often, students develop meaningful relationships with their teachers that motivate students to do well in the class. If robots taught in schools, that sense of warmth between a student and teacher is lost. Also, having robots as teacher would replace the hundreds of thousands of teachers that rely on their job to support themselves/ their families. If robots become the primary teacher, many well qualified people would be out of a job. On the other hand, governments would not longer have to use a portion of their budget to pay teachers. This could mean saving the government a lot of money that could be used for something else. In addition, the idea that students would have a personalized lessons based on their skills is something very beneficial to the child. From my observation, I believe that one of the biggest problems in education is either too slow or too fast of a pace for some students. Those who learn quickly find themselves bored and uninterested. Those who take longer to understand things get frustrated and want to give up. Having an individualized pace would ensure the student is getting exactly what they need. Something else that is important to consider is robots in the work place. Something that I think is so valuable is relationships amongst real humans. If that is taken away, there could be severe consequences. Human interaction is something that will keep people sane. If everything turns to electronic systems, people will become more lonely.

Wether teacher robots become normalized or not, technology is rapidly advancing and will soon affect us all whether we like it or not.

“New technology is not good or evil in and of itself. It’s all about how people choose to use it.” -David Wong
